More musings on design

I’ve been doing a lot of research into design lately.  I was trying to find one of the better ways to get my website design to appear properly on desktops, mobile devices, tablets, and everything in between.  I learned about a topic called Responsive Web Design, which can take care of this in a number of different formats.  It seems the base theme that I’ve been using to make this site already uses one of these formats.  One of the articles listed off this site was called ‘The Dao of Design’ which was a really good read.  I really liked its’ emphasis on simplicity and the desire to weed out any ritual being carried forward for the sake of ritual, instead embracing the new techniques and features offered to this medium.

“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Is a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, who was some world war 2 french pilot who also wrote ‘La Petit Prince’.  I’ve noticed this mode of thinking come into prevalence as of late.  Apple uses this a lot, so does Braun, and Dyson.  These 3 companies, I think, are ahead of their time with the kind of design they make.  I’ve based the design for the latest prototype of the application I’ve been working on on the Metro style (now called Windows 8 style thanks to a lawsuit with some German company).

I’m planning to put some more time into designing my website over the next week or two.  I figure this site could be a great showcase for my design work.  Maybe I could have a switch

where the user can switch between themes in order to view all of my styles.  I’m also trying to learn inkscape in order to make vector based graphics for an emblem so that I can just export it out at various resolutions and it’ll still look great.
